Building Industry Hawaii welcomes to the Top 10 Roofers list Pacific Islands Group, debuting at No. 6 with 2022 earnings of $6.7 million, a 168% increase from $2.5 million in 2021. Pacific Islands and other roofing companies that participated in the annual Top 10 Roofers survey reported $148.2 million in combined revenues for 2022. That’s an increase of 13.5% from reported revenues of $130.6 million in 2021.
This year, we have a tie for ninth place between R&C Roofing Contractors and Honolulu Roofing at $4.7 million each.
Receiving honorable mention this year is Kokua Roofing Services with $3.4 million in revenues.
Combined revenues for 2022 set a new record for Hawaii’s Top 10 Roofers, outpacing the next highest total of $130.6 million in 2021.
Hina Schipa of Buck Roofing on Hawaii Island says that supply chain challenges, such as long-lead times for materials and higher prices were the main reasons the company saw a drop in sales. Except for Buck Roofing, Honolulu Roofing and Kokua Roofing Services, the other seven Top 10 roofing companies reported revenue growth.
We welcome broader participation for next year’s Top 10 Roofers survey, so read about these roofing companies to see how your company compares.

Beachside Roofing captured the No. 1 spot for the 13th consecutive year with 2022 revenue of $33.8 million, an increase of 5.32% over earnings of $32 million in 2021.
The company completed about 300 residential, commercial and government projects in 2022. These include Azure Ala Moana, The Central Ala Moana and Koula at Ward Village—all high-rise condominiums—and Hale Kalele, an affordable rental apartment building in the Ala Moana/lower Makiki area that also houses a shelter and support services center for at-risk youth.
Jobs that Beachside started in 2022 include the Maui Coast Hotel, Pasha Hawaii’s terminal buildings and the Department of Veterans Affairs’ Advance Leeward Outpatient Healthcare Access (ALOHA) project in Kalaeloa (since renamed the Daniel Kahikina Akaka Department of Veterans Affairs Community-Based Outpatient Clinic).
“Many of our large projects constructed in 2022 were affected by supply-chain issues, including volatile pricing and unreasonably long lead times,” says President Scot Jimenez. “We managed procurement for the VA’s ALOHA project by purchasing and stockpiling roofing materials ahead of time.”
Founded in 1984, Beachside performs 30% of its work in the public sector. The company anticipates celebrating its 40th anniversary next year.

Remaining at No. 2 for the 12th consecutive year is Commercial Roofing & Waterproofing Hawaii Inc., which reported $27.7 million in 2022 revenues, a growth of 15% over 2021 revenues of $24.1 million.
Commercial Roofing topped off the following projects in 2022: Maui Kamaole AOAO—also a Roofing Contractors Association of Hawaii top projects winner in 2022—for the installation of a rustic-shingle re-roof of 29 buildings; a metal-roof conversion at Ace Hardware, Kapaa; Waipouli Town Center for a Sarnafil décor roof installation; and Kauhale Waipio Rainbow Series AOAO for a rustic-shingle re-roof of 16 buildings.
Projects started in 2022 include the re-roof and PV installation of the Manoa Innovation Center; Mercedes Benz, Kahului; Greenwood AOAO; Kapiolani Medical Center and Kaiser High School.
President and CEO Guy Akasaki says the most challenging project of 2022 by far was the Maui Kamaole AOAO that included a rustic-shingle reroof of mansard roofs with a pitch of 20:12, or 59.4 degrees.
“The crews worked from ladders 100% of the time to do this roof installation all day, every day,” says Akasaki. “A few areas of the roof required scaffolding to finish the top mansard roof details.”

“The fully reinforced Polyurea coating job at UH Manoa’s Sakamaki Hall was completed while classes were in session,” says President and CEO Brennan Leong. “This required managing weather conditions and construction schedules on a very busy campus.”
Projects that Kapili started in 2022 include Kunia Shopping Center, Hale Pauahi Towers and the Waianae Moku Education Center at Leeward Community College.
Among the accolades the company received in 2022 were Quantum Contractor designation from Polyglass, “Best of HONOLULU” from HONOLULU Magazine and “Best of Hawaii” from KITV 4 Island News. President/CEO: Louis Tory Jr.
Specialties: Low slope, fluid applied, single ply, modified bitumen, steep slope, metal roofing, tile roof and shingle roof
Hawaii state license: BC-8576
Tory’s Roofing & Waterproofing Inc. reported $16.6 million in 2022 revenue, an increase of 14.5% from its 2021 earnings of $14.5 million. Louis Tory Jr. is president and CEO of the 51-year-old company founded by his father, Louis Tory Sr., in 1972. Projects in 2022 were split 40% and 60% between the public and private sectors, respectively.
Projects completed by Tory’s in 2022 include Kapilina Beach Homes, Mililani Self Storage and Eleele Elementary School Building C. Projects launched in 2022 include Timbers and a re-roof for Kauai High School Building V.
To celebrate its 50th year in business last year, Tory’s Roofing held a contest to give away a free roof. Sandra GT Tory, administration manager, told KHON 2’s Kelly Simek about the winner and how the company was quite moved by the hundreds of entries that told of their need for a new roof. She said it was hard for the company to decide between the entries, and after reading four of them as a group, they were ready to give away more than one.
“We are in this industry to take care of people,” Tory says. “I think moving forward, we will keep on that trajectory and keep Hawaii covered and do the best we can to adapt and change and be better as a company.”

Surface Shield Roofing Co. LLC remains in 5th place with nearly $15.9 million in revenues in 2022, up 23.2% over the previous year’s $12.9 million. The company reports that 70% of its 2022 projects are in the public sector. Also in 2022, Surface Shield was one of 185 companies in Inc. Magazine’s annual “Pacific Regionals” list.
Projects completed in 2022 by Surface Shield included: more than 30 for the Hawaii Department of Education; The Towers Apartments; and Red Hill ES, a challenging job with a demanding schedule. The job site was in an inaccessible—but critical—area and also required a new solar component.
“The Towers Apartments reroofing job was a difficult project because of access challenges and the weather,” says Shon Gregory, Surface Shield president and CEO. “The hard work resulted in a new and robust roofing system.”
In 2022, Surface Shield began working on projects at Moanalua High School Building R, Castle High School walkways, Waialua Portables, Barber’s Point ES Building B reroof and others that will bridge into 2023.
Surface Shield was established in 2007 and has built its client base over the past 16 years.

Pacific Islands Group debuts as a Top 10 Roofer at No. 6 with 2022 earnings of $6.7 million, a 168% increase from $2.5 million in 2021.
Wilcox Elementary School, Kapaa Elementary School, Waimea High School, Straub Medical Center, the U.S. Postal Service facility in Pearl City and a West Oahu resort are among the projects the company completed in 2022.
At the resort, an acrylic coating system was used on 22 roofs (140,000 square feet). “We worked around 1,000-plus mechanical and duct-support legs,” says Co-Owner/President Danny Teffera. “We power-washed the surfaces and reclaimed all the water so it wouldn’t go down the primary drains. We removed and reapplied the tribal art designs on five lower roofs. We’re proud that our team finished the job three weeks ahead of schedule with no incidents.”
Work that Pacific Islands Group started in 2022 includes Pono Kai Resort, the Board of Water Supply and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Kaneohe. The company received the 2022 “People’s Choice Award” from the Roofing Contractors Association of Hawaii (RCAH) earlier this year. RCAH also recognized its work at the West Oahu resort as “Hawaii’s Top Fluid Applied Roofing Project.”
Founded in 2006, the company performs 20% of its work in the public sector.

President/CEO: Davelyn Leong Martin
Specialties: Low slope, fluid applied and tile roof

David’s Custom Roofing & Painting Inc. ranks eighth place with 2022 Hawaii-based revenue of $6 million, a 17.6% increase from $5.1 million in revenue in 2021. Public sector work occupies just 1% of the company’s business.
President and CEO Davelyn Leong Martin leads the family business founded in 1980. “[During] 2022, we had a year filled with many residential and private sector projects,” says Martin. “We noticed a large number of customers opting for repairs over complete re-roofs. We had a lot more smaller projects overall.”
David’s Custom Roofing & Painting is also a general contractor, and that helped with the 2022 gains. Not only did the crews at David’s have painting projects, but there were also carpentry, gutters and roofing jobs.
The 43-year-old company was a finalist for Honolulu’s Best Roofers of 2022 by KITV 4 Island News’ “People’s Choice Awards” and also was a finalist for the Star-Advertiser’s “People’s Choice Awards Best of the Best Roofers of 2022.”

Sharing the No. 9 spot with R&C Roofing Contractors is Honolulu Roofing Co., which also earned $4.7 million in 2022, down 4.08% from $4.9 million in 2021 when it also finished in 9th place.
Established in 2002, the 21-year-old company reports that 20% of its contracts are for the public sector. Last year, it won an award from the Roofing Contractors Association of Hawaii for the best single-ply project.
Completed projects in 2022 include renovations at Turtle Bay Resort, Reservoir 228, the Honolulu Zoo and Daniel K. Inouye International Airport. New projects for 2023 include Wheeler Air Force Base and The Royal Hawaiian Hotel.
“For the Turtle Bay [Resort] renovations, we faced an extremely tight set-up area with wind and rain,” says Dan Jaeger, vice president of Honolulu Roofing. “Work included a combination of single-ply and a garden roof, waterproofing at the reflection pools and the adult pools, and standing-seam metal roofing at various locations [on the property].”

This year, R&C Roofing Contractors moves up a notch to No. 9, tied with Honolulu Roofing Co., both with earnings of $4.7 million in 2022. R&C Roofing saw a 20.5% gain over $3.9 million in 2021.
Projects the company completed in 2022 include the Life Care Center of Hilo, Nuuanu YMCA and Building 2155 at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam (JBPHH) that houses administrative offices for the U.S. Navy. R&C also did maintenance work on roofs at the 52 public libraries statewide, which took five months to complete.
“For the library project, we had to rent vehicles and equipment, and Kauai, Molokai and Lanai had limited availability of both,” says President Chris Tamura. “We sent a three-man crew to each neighbor island, and they stayed until the work there was done. The pandemic continued to affect the supply chain; for example, it took one year for the manufacturer to fabricate and deliver the Polyiso insulation that we needed for the JBPHH project.”
R&C started jobs at YMCA’s Kailua and Kaimuki facilities in 2022 and donated labor for roof repairs and maintenance for The Salvation Army, Pearl City Foundation and Moiliili Community Center.
Founded in 2007, R&C performs 15% of its work in the public sector.

Based in Kailua-Kona on Hawaii Island, Kokua Roofing earns an honorable mention in Building Industry Hawaii’s Top 10 Roofers list. Its revenue of $3.4 million in 2022 is a decrease of 34.6% from $5.2 million in 2021. According to the company, the drop is largely due to difficulty finding workers and the company’s decision to scale back as it recovered from the pandemic.
Of the 72 projects that Kokua completed in 2022, 63 were residential. Other work included Keaau Shopping Center, the Pepsi building in Keaau, the Kim Chong Building in Kailua-Kona and a medical center in Hilo. In 2022, it started eight projects, all of them residential.
“Kukio Golf and Beach Club is an exclusive, gated community on the Kona-Kohala Coast of Hawaii Island,” says President Ron Lloyd. “We specified Zappone copper shingles for the roof of a residence built along the ocean. The copper shingles are not only beautiful but extremely durable, and within a few months after installation, they will start to develop a protective and distinctive patina that will help preserve the roof.”
The company won a “Best of Hawaii-West” award from West Hawaii Today in 2022. Founded in 2011, Kokua Roofing did not perform any of its work in the public sector in 2022.
