The 18th annual CANstruction competition, hosted by AIA Honolulu, is set for Sept. 16 through Sept. 23 at Kahala Mall.
The public is invited to vote on 3D structures created entirely from canned goods by eight local architectural and engineering teams. All canned goods used will be donated to Hawaiʻi Foodbank at the conclusion of the competition.
This year’s theme, “Passport to End Hunger,” encourages teams to design structures that envision a world without hunger.
“Let’s board the plane of creativity, hop on the train of imagination, or even set sail on the sea of inspiration to help eliminate hunger in our community and provide healthy meals,” AIA Honolulu said in a news release.

Ferraro Choi and Associates Ltd & Nordic PCL Construction, Inc. - G70 & Swinerton Builders
- MGA Architecture LLC
- Okahara and Associates, Inc.
- RIM Architects
- RMA Architects Inc.
In addition, a Keiki Corner Build will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Sept. 16, with AIA Honolulu member-architects guiding children ages 5-12 years old in a free building session with hundreds of cans donated for their use.
Public voting will take place from Sept. 17 through Sept. 23. Voters can cast ballots online at the AIA Honolulu website or by scanning the QR code for each team’s structure. Each vote costs $1, which will be donated to Hawaiʻi Foodbank.
The structure with the most votes will be named People’s Choice Award winner.
For almost the last 20 years, CANstruction has collected over 724,119 pounds of canned food — the equivalent of 572,657 meals — for local residents. The Hawai’i Foodbank and its network offer food assistance to one of every six people living in Hawaiʻi, which includes almost 54,000 children.
