“Foundations for Tomorrow – Building Dreams,” a new Hawaii Building Industry Foundation (HBIF) scholarship initiative launched in July, is accepting applications through Nov. 15.
The initiative supports Hawai‘i students statewide who are pursuing degrees or certificates in construction, architecture, engineering, carpentry, electrical work, project management and other building industry trades.
“With Hawai‘i experiencing continued growth and development across all islands, the need for a skilled and well-educated workforce in the building industry has never been greater,” said HBIF Chairman of the Board Alan Shintani, president of Alan Shintani Inc., in a July release. “HBIF is committed to fostering a sustainable future for Hawai‘i through education and workforce development in the building and construction trade.”
Students enrolled in building industry programs at Hawai‘i community colleges, public and private universities and specialty programs are eligible for HBIF’s “Foundations for Tomorrow – Building Dreams” scholarship. These organizations include:
- University of Hawai‘i
- Chaminade University
- Hawai‘i Pacific University
- Honolulu Community College and all other statewide community college campuses that offer construction training and/or related programs
- The Building Industry Association Hawai‘i (BIA Hawaii) Pre-Apprenticeship Certificate Training (PACT) program
- Any industry trade-related training program that offers a certificate in Hawai‘i

HBIF provided two full-ride scholarships to two PACT program students in January 2025 and supported the launch of the new Maui PACT program, set to begin in Fall 2025, with an expected cohort graduation of 10 Maui students.
Founded in 2004, HBIF is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to strengthening Hawai‘i’s building and construction industry through education, workforce development and community resilience.
