Francis Oda, G70 cofounder, passed away Feb. 14, 2026. Leading the firm for more than 50 years, Oda consistently applied his philosophy of culturally based design to his numerous projects across all sectors. His career led him to receive upwards of 50 awards, including the American Institute of Architects Honor Award and the Gordon Bradley Humanitarian Award.

“Francis was more than one of our founders — he was a mentor, spiritual father and source of inspiration for everyone who had the privilege of working with him,” said Linda Miki, G70 CEO, in the company’s release. “His legacy lives on in our G70 ‘ohana, our projects and our commitment to serving Hawai‘i and beyond with integrity and care.”

Oda also helped develop the University of Hawai‘i (UH) at Mānoa School of Architecture’s Doctorate of Architecture program while serving as adjunct associate professor and Mānoa Forum Fellow.

“Francis was such a monument in the field. A one-time architect for the University, he oversaw the development of many of the institution’s now seminal buildings. With G70, he extended Hawai‘i’s influence worldwide,” said Professor Bill Chapman, former dean of the School of Architecture, in UH’s release. “He was a true gentleman, who embraced his responsibilities to the wider community.”

Oda is survived by his wife, Caroline, and two children, Reid and Nalani.
