It’s clear the new Central Pacific Bank branch in Kahului is something special.

From artwork created by local artists to specialty finishes and modern-edge decor, Central Pacific Bank (CPB) brings a fresh sensibility to its newest location while still staying true to the company’s local values and guiding principles that date back to its founding in 1954, when the bank serviced struggling immigrant laborers seeking new opportunities.

Nordic PCL Construction Inc. was the general contractor for the ground-up construction of the multi-million-dollar facility, with McClyde Gaborno spearheading the effort as project manager to handle all the detailed coordination and communication within the project team.

NAVIGATING CHALLENGES

Nordic PCL was a part of the pre-construction stages as of January 2023. Permits were issued in August. It wasn’t necessarily all smooth sailing, however. While the fallout of the wildfires and related recovery efforts didn’t directly affect the project, the team did encounter challenges due to some of the products utilized in construction.

“[S]pecialty finishes and custom-building elements entailed lengthy material lead times that impacted the project schedule,” explains Gaborno. “The team made sequencing adjustments to accommodate material delays while minimizing any schedule disruptions.

“Additionally, the bank had various security and network provisions that required extensive coordination between all parties as well as the careful integration of those devices into the surrounding finishes to ensure a clean, seamless look.”

According to Gaborno, detailed coordination meetings and field reviews were the key to navigating these issues, ensuring that everyone involved had a clear understanding of how each element fit into the greater plan and adjusting their work sequence accordingly.

“With careful planning our team minimized disruptions that would impede installation of later components or create rework,” he says. “Open communication with the team was essential.”

With Gaborno at the helm, the project team achieved substantial completion of the project last year on Sept. 20.

BUILDING A BETTER BANK

This completed facility is a nearly 10,000-square-foot, two-story structure that houses a range of financial services as well as department offices, a drive-thru ATM and ample parking to better serve its customers.

Within the Kahului branch, CPB also offers complimentary access to its Tidepools conference room, which offers wi-fi connectivity and other modern conveniences for use by the general public and businesses during meetings.

Further solidifying its connection to the community, CPB also enlisted local artists to enhance the new building, making it stand out as more than just another staid financial institution. Maui muralist and fine artist Nobele Richardson provided exterior artwork that reflects and pays tribute to the surrounding landscape.

“The artwork on the exterior metal screens is created by thousands of perforations of varying sizes, carefully arranged to create an image that pays homage to the beauty of Kukua‘emoku, ‘Īao Needle and the surrounding Wailuku Valley,” he says.

“The lobby features the Northern Lights fixture consisting of approximately 70 acrylic prisms and LEDs suspended at varying heights for a transformative display,” Richardson continues. “Additionally, there are various design elements inspired by the local scenery including coral stone, tile patterns and interior artwork by Maui Artist Melissa Rigney.”

A JOB WELL DONE

“All construction projects have challenges, and it is those challenges that often yield celebrated solutions,” says Gaborno. “Our success stems from the joint efforts of our team, subcontractors and suppliers working diligently to deliver a beautiful and modern facility.

“Understanding and working as one team was essential in delivering this project.”

Gaborno adds that Nordic PCL is continuing to work with CPB on items “to enhance the banking experience” at the branch.
