The Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum announced July 26 that a new scholarship program will be launched for students enrolled in career and technical education programs at Honolulu Community College.
With an endowment of $26,000 from the museum, the newly established USS Bowfin Memorial Scholarship Fund aims to financially assist students preparing for careers in the trades, starting with the Fall 2024 semester.
“We are excited to partner with Honolulu Community College and the University of Hawai‘i Foundation on this scholarship program,” said Chuck Merkel, executive director of the Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum, in a release announcing the donation. “There is a high demand for skilled workers at the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and in Hawai‘i’s maritime industry. We want to help develop local students for good-paying jobs here that will allow them to stay home, rather than relocating elsewhere.”
Scholarships can be used to cover attendance costs, including tuition, books and fees. Students must be enrolled in one of the following programs:
• Electrical Installation and Maintenance Technology
• Sheet Metal and Plastics Technology
• Welding Technology
• Occupational and Environmental Safety Management.
