AIA Honolulu has announced a number of events open to the public during Architecture Month in October.
“As we kick off Architecture Month, we invite everyone to dive into the captivating world of architectural design, where creativity meets innovation and shapes the spaces we live in,” AIA Vice President Phil Camp said in a press release. “Join us for a series of dynamic events this month to celebrate architecture’s profound impact on our world and its ability to elevate our everyday lives.”

Hawaii Convention Center
7:45 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Oct. 2
PBX Hawaiʻi is the state’s premier trade show for the construction and design industries. Co-produced by AIA Honolulu, CSI Honolulu Chapter, and GCA of Hawaii, this annual event brings together architects, engineers, contractors, owner representatives, and other construction and design professionals for a day of education, information, and networking. Exhibition Hall hours are 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Educational Sessions held from 7:45 a.m. to 4:15 p.m.
AIA Honolulu Firm Crawl (Open House)
Central business district – various locations
5 to 8 p.m. Oct. 4
Celebrate the First Friday of Architecture Month and visit up to 10 design firms in the central business district of downtown and adjacent areas during this open house.
Many locations include pupu and drinks! Learn more about architectural design, interior design, planning, landscape design and meet the people shaping Hawai‘i’s built environment during this annual tradition.

‘Faces of Architecture’

The Faces of Architecture project showcases the diversity and inclusivity of architects in Hawaii including age, gender, disabilities, race and ethnicity, origin, and pathways into architecture. The exhibit invites interest in the profession by examining who architects are, what drives their passion, and why they chose architecture as their career.
Photography Workshop featuring Olivier Koning

Spend the day with a renowned photographer and learn strategies & techniques to capture successful photography. The workshop will include a lecture in the morning followed by a photoshoot in downtown Honolulu. We will remain as a group so our photographer can share strategies and answer questions while out on assignment. After lunch, the group will return to the CFA for afternoon crits and further discussion.
Cost: $50 AIA Members, $75 Non-Members, $40 Students; lunch not included.
Architectural Walking Tour
McKinley High School
8 a.m. to noon Oct. 19
AIA Honolulu is pleased to offer our special annual walking tour for Architecture Month.
The McKinley High School campus and surrounding area has several buildings on the National Historic Register built between 1924 and 1939. Walk the area and discuss the architects who designed the buildings and the character they exude today. Staggered tours will start every 10 minutes.
Urban Sketchers Oahu

Sketchers of all skill levels are welcome to join fellow artists for a morning of sketching in any medium to chronicle this historic area. Participants will sketch for two and a half hours, documenting the local scenes and making connections, then gather for a show-and-tell social.
‘Spanning the Future’

AIA Honolulu invites the public to join in a free screening of “Spanning the Future,” to be shown simultaneously in Honolulu on Oahu and in Kona on Hawaiʻi island.
This is a documentary about the life and work of Frei Otto. As an architect and engineer he laid the foundation for contemporary lightweight architecture, and his ideas are still awe-inspiring decades after he revealed them. This fact was cemented when he was named the 2015 Laureate of the Pritzker Architecture Prize. A conversation follows with Simon Chiu, executive producer, at the Honolulu location.

This event is geared towards architecture students and recent graduates interested in next steps for their career. Learn about life after architecture school, applying to firms, internships, portfolio review, interviews, the ARE exams, licensing, and more.
Hawaii Island Young Architects Workshop
Saturday, Oct 26, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 26
Donkey Mill Art Center, 78-6670 Mamalahoa Hwy.
In this workshop students will work side by side with local architects and investigate design related concepts. This one-day event offers students ages 12 to 16 the chance to dive into the world of architectural design under the mentorship of local professional architects. Participants will tackle a design challenge that pushes them to think critically about key architectural elements, including light, sun protection, airflow, and environmental connections or protections.
During the workshop, students will participate in hands-on activities to construct a small shelter at a 1:12 scale. All necessary materials, such as drafting kits, self-healing cutting tools, glue, tape and various structural supplies will be provided.
Cost: $45-$55.
