Gino Soqueña has been executive director of Hawaii Building and Construction Trades Council (HBCTC) for seven years now, but his list of credentials and industry involvement goes much further. An Operating Engineers Union Local No. 3 member for 35 years, he has served in positions in the union including business representative and Hawai‘i district representative.
A strong advocate for unions, Soqueña says his involvement in HBCTC allows him to “[meet] with developers and government agencies to ensure that construction projects are done by union signatory contractors.”
His work has led him to collaborate and foster connections with leaders throughout the public, private and nonprofit sectors. Soqueña says by advocating for unions and “advancing [HBCTC] and its affiliates,” he has sought to make a difference in the building industry.
Soqueña says “helping people and making a difference” is his main motivator. His penchant for creating change goes beyond union and industry pursuits. He is also actively involved in organizations such as Filipino Chamber of Commerce of Hawai‘i, Alzheimer’s Association Hawaii Chapter, Blood Bank of Hawaii, Knights of Rizal Aloha Chapter and Aloha Shriners.
