General contractor Nan Inc. has donated $1 million to the YMCA of Honolulu, a transformational gift that will go towards the redevelopment of the nonprofit’s flagship branch. The Nu‘uanu YMCA will undergo a major reconstruction and renovation to include a new main facility, new gymnasium and athletic facility and affordable housing. The new gym will be named in honor of former YMCA Honolulu President and CEO Don Anderson.

Anderson and Nan Chul Shin, Nan Inc. founder and owner, have partnered for over two decades on volunteer community projects in Cambodia, Myanmar, the Philippines and Hawai‘i, building out classrooms, shelters, infrastructure and community spaces.

The full cost of YMCA’s project has not been disclosed — reports say the design phase will continue through 2026 — but has received backing from several entities including the Central Pacific Bank Foundation, Hawai‘i Federal Credit Union, the David C. Ai Charitable Trust and the Clarence T.C. Ching Foundation, among others.

Construction on the nearly 3-acre site is scheduled to begin in 2027.
