More than $270 million was announced for construction projects statewide on July 9 following Governor Josh Green’s
signing of House Bill 1800, a supplemental budget amending Act 164, Session Laws of Hawai‘i 2023, appropriating funds for capital
improvement projects.
Key allocations include:
• $230 million for the Hawai‘i Housing Finance and Development Corporation to finance additional affordable housing statewide.
• $33 million for kauhale projects to support the Office on Homelessness and Housing Solutions.
• $10.5 million for the rehabilitation and repair of housing units by the Hawai‘i Public Housing Authority.
The supplemental budget also calls for an additional $1.4 billion in general obligation bond funds to be issued for local construction projects.
Housing continues to be a major issue as families continue to leave the state due to a lack of affordable options.
With 21 kauhale and 13,000 new affordable units set to be built by 2026, the Green Administration says it’s continuing to demonstrate a “deep commitment” to building additional housing for all Hawai‘i residents.
