The Howard Hughes Corp. (HHC), the developer behind Ward Village, recently donated $20,000 to support build projects for Honolulu Habitat for Humanity. The funds will be spent on future build projects, as well as a project currently underway in Waimānalo.
Work in Waimānalo started on March 22 and was scheduled to be completed on June 8. The brand new, 2,018-square-foot home includes four bedrooms, two bathrooms and walk-in showers, and was designed with a single-floor layout to ensure accessibility for all household members.
In addition to the monetary donation, HHC will participate in three build day events with 24 employee volunteers working alongside members from over 200 other organizations to help complete construction of the home.
“We are honored to partner with Honolulu Habitat for Humanity in this meaningful endeavor,” says Rebecca Wright, director of design and construction at HHC. Wright serves on the board of Honolulu Habitat for Humanity and is co-chair on the organization’s Wahine Build committee, which provides hands-on training and guidance for women in the construction industry.
“This build represents our shared commitment to providing safe, affordable housing for families in need, and we are proud to play a role in making the Flores family’s dream of homeownership a reality,” she adds.
When construction in Waimānalo is finalized, the new structure will house longtime supporters of Honolulu Habitat for Humanity. Volunteer Vernon Akina has donated over 1,300 hours building and repairing homes for the organization. He will move into the new home with his mother Margarita, his daughter and her two sons.
