Amanda Canada
When I joined Trade Media Hui in February 2018, my first assignment was Building Industry Hawai‘i’s Women in Construction issue.
My background? Journalism.
My intricate knowledge of construction? Let’s just say I was as fresh as drywall before its first coat of paint.
But one thing I did know: construction was a male-dominated industry. So, imagine my surprise when I flipped through the drafts of my first issue and discovered there was an entire national association dedicated to supporting women in construction.

Compelled, I cold-called the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) Hawaii Chapter and joined on the spot — before I had attended one meeting or met a single member.
That instinctive choice was transformative.
In 2025, as Immediate Past President of NAWIC Hawaii Chapter 114, I’m now serving my fourth term on the board of directors. I’ve forged invaluable professional connections, learned how proactive people shape industries and built lifelong friendships. I’ve also partnered with incredible women-led organizations that are pushing boundaries — not just in construction, but across all sectors.
Most importantly, I’ve evolved into someone who can truly make a difference in the industry.
My story is a testament to the power of coming together with shared goals. If I could jump in — brand new to the industry — so could any wahine.
Whether you’re fresh, unpainted drywall or a beautiful mural, opportunities for women in our fascinating industry are limitless.
Go build your success!
