Ward Village, the 60-acre master-planned community in Kaka‘ako, achieved another construction milestone earlier this year with the Jan. 19 groundbreaking of Kalae, the neighborhood’s tenth residential tower.
With Kalae, Ward Village developer Howard Hugues projects completion of 330 new homes and retail spaces, along with public art installations that will all integrate with nearby Victoria Ward Park to continue the urban renaissance underway in metro Honolulu. Resident amenities will include lap and recreation pools, a spa, fitness studio, saunas and BBQ areas.
A planned community plaza at the intersection of Ward Avenue and Auahi Street will also serve as an inviting entrance to the area.
“Kalae’s thoughtful integration of streetscapes and new homes frames the makai section of Victoria Ward Park and builds upon our sense of
community in Ward Village,” said Doug Johnstone, president of the Hawai‘i market for Howard Hughes, in a news release.

Layton Construction is the general contractor for the project designed by architect Solomon Cordwell Buenz, with landscaping by Vita Inc.
Interior design is under the direction of Nicole Hollis, who previously worked on redevelopment projects at Kona Village on Hawai‘i island and 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay on Kaua‘i.
Demand remains healthy for new development in Kaka‘ako, with the first seven residential towers at Ward Village already sold out, according to developers.
To mark the start of construction at Kalae, Ward Village and Layton Construction also donated $37,500 to the Honolulu Museum of Art in support of its mission to promote art and culture in Hawai‘i.
